5 Ways to Spot a Liar

Editorials - Just 5!

Is that the Truth?

liarKnow how the person normally talks - A good way to tell a liar is to know their normal conversational behavior, also known as a baseline behavior. Knowing a person’s baseline behavior will allow detection of lies, and will keep an innocent person that’s shy from being labeled a liar. Unfortunately, there are people that lie from the initial meeting. So, one has to learn to be like a lie detector reader. Ask basic questions that you know the answers to, and from that, you will learn a person’s truthfulness behavior.

Trust your intuition - Trust your intuition, your gut feeling, and NOT what you want or desire. Know the difference. Often most people have a good internal mechanism to know when someone is lying … but a person allows wants and desires to cloud the “truthfulness detector.” Often the moment you 2nd guess yourself, you have fallen for the lie.

Facial expressions - Wide-eyed, innocent look, that “not me” look is a dead-giveaway. Many liars don’t give good eye contact. That’s true for some, but then there are those that know this fact so they give too much eye contact. Too much eye contact, that is more than the social norm, is forced and not natural. Occasional glances away are normal.

Speech - There are noticeable pauses while speaking. Some people aren’t good at making up stories on the spot, so they often pause. For liars that are aware of this fact, they often create a diversion from the conversation. They may bring up another topic to argue about, begin questioning you, run off and leave the area, or break things.

Ask the person if they are lying - Detailed questioning after the liar has finished speaking may show inconsistencies in the story. For liars that are aware of this fact, they may get angry at you and attempt to make you feel guilty by saying, “so what you don’t trust me?” They may taunt you and say you can ask so-and-so. When you second-guess a liar, they are quick to react in anger in order to put YOU on the defensive and deflect attention from the lie at hand. If you catch a liar in a lie, they will often attempt to get you to question your own memory.
